July 2008
Dear Quilter,
Life is gradually changing here at PennyPot Patchwork. We had never opened a shop before we opened this one so we had to improvise a lot as we learned the ropes. Now we are learning how to close a shop and again we find we are making it up as we go along!
First of all I want to tell you how grateful we are for all the kind wishes we have received. I know there will be times when we shall miss your company enormously. So, before we close I want to tell you about our plans for the next few weeks:
- We are reducing the price of all our designer ranges of fabric by approximately £2.00 per metre. All Moda, Hoffman,Fabric Freedom and Timeless Treasures design ranges will be priced at £8.00 per metre. This includes all the latest patterns e.g. Moda ‘Simplicity’ and batiks and flannels too!
- Our top quality plains are great value having been reduced from £6.50 per metre to £5.00 per metre - these include Robert Kauffman, Fabric Freedom and Moda plains. In addition I will be adding more fabrics to our £6.00 per metre specials, so these will be changing all the time.
- Whilst writing this, I have decided to add our remaining ‘tone on tone’/ creamy neutrals to the £6.00 per metre specials! We also have a number of co-ordinated ‘4 fat quarter’ bundles priced at £4.25 each which are very good value.
- All threads – YLI quilting, Superior and Robison Anton are reduced by £1.00 to £4.40, £4.40 and £2.99 respectively.
- I have received new copies of the popular ‘Ashley’ and ‘Penelope’ bag patterns which are available whilst stocks last. I will not be reordering, so this is the last chance to obtain a copy here!
We are going to have a stand at the Harrogate Quilt Show, so if you don’t get the chance to come and see us before then, do stop by and say ‘Hello’!
The shop will be closed during the show.
Chris has just gone out to buy more ‘supers’ for the beehives so we hope to have honey for sale before we close!
Hoping you have an enjoyable summer, despite the lack of sunshine so far!
Best wishes,
Helen
June 2008 Newsletter
Dear Quilter,
Spring has sprung here at PennyPot and at last we seem to have some real daylight hours: better for choosing colours and sewing new projects.
We have had some very successful classes this term and it has been particularly pleasing to welcome so many new quilters to our ‘Absolute Beginner’ classes with Sue Abrey. Sue Propst’s Intermediate Sampler course has been very popular and Jo Bebbington’s making the most of your sewing machine workshop was a revelation to all! Those machines have never been so creative! We have had one highly successful Bag Ladies workshop with Linda and another to follow in July.
We have had lots of enquiries about our next programme and so I think that this is the right time to tell you that Chris and I have decided that for us the time has come to hang up the “Gone Quilting” sign in the shop and to take some time off. PennyPot Patchwork has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It has been 100% commitment for the last 4 years: from initial planning to today. The only disadvantage has been that running a quilt shop means that you have no time to sew anymore; rather like working in a chocolate factory and not being allowed to eat the stock.
The most enjoyable part of PennyPot Patchwork has been you, our customer. We have been fortunate to meet the most interesting, creative, talented people and we are both very grateful for your support. Our tutors have shared our belief that patchwork should first of all be enjoyable and achievable, a combination which then enables us to gain the confidence to be creative – a big thank you to all who have taught at PennyPot.
We have not set a firm date yet for closing but expect to do so sometime after the Harrogate Quilt Show in September. We are considering other projects, which could involve visiting quilt groups or attending more shows – we will keep you posted if we decide to go down that route. However in the short term I think we will have a holiday.
In the meanwhile it is business as usual at PennyPot, so do continue to call in and see us.
On a practical note, our gift vouchers are no longer available, those of you who still have a voucher to be redeemed please try to do so before September. Any unredeemed/ unexpired vouchers may be posted to the shop address thereafter and the value will be refunded.
Very best wishes,
Helen and Chris.

‘Congratulations!’ to Sue Propst on the publication of her first book. ‘Beautiful Blooms’. This is a collection of appliquéd flowers designed by Sue and presented with lovely colour illustrations. Sue will be in the shop to sign copies of her book on: Saturday April 19th: 2.00 – 4.00 pm.

Class programme: Spring 2008
Our class programme for April – July is on the courses page and I hope you find something here to interest you. We have classes to suit all levels and a wide range of interests.
I am an unrepentant bag addict. Indeed, yes, I am a bag lady! (In the best possible way …… I hope!) You can never have too many bags, after all. Come and join PennyPot “Bag Ladies” and create a lovely bag. Make one for yourself, make another for a friend, make some as Christmas presents, just make some for fun!
Those who wish to attend beginner’s workshops and are busy during the working week will be able to come to our series of classes designed to build on basic skills. Our ‘Sew Easy Rail Fence’ lap quilt is both striking and simple to complete. Sew Easy Rail Fence makes an excellent first quilt for those with a basic knowledge of rotary cutting. Absolute Beginners foundation pieced pots is a great class for those who wish to try this clever technique.
Linda has a number of quilted postcards to show you in her workshop. This is a lovely activity and you will be able to complete one in the afternoon and start on another one too. Quilted postcards have caused quite a stir in patchworking circles recently.
If you would like to make a day of it, I am going to show you how to make a tote bag in 20 minutes on the same day. Yes, I do mean 20 minutes! These bags are great. As part of the effort to get plastic bags off the streets, come along and make this bag and then go and show your friends how to make them too. They really are lined, wadded, reversible bags and can be put together in 20 minutes ….. Believe me, I’m a quilter!
In addition to our Saturday workshops we have two weekday courses to offer. Sue Propst will be offering her Intermediate Sampler Quilt course and Linda will be teaching her Hand Sewing Group on a Friday afternoon. Both of these courses run for 12 weeks.
Jo Bebbington has designed a new 6-week, “Free-motion”, machine quilting course. Learn how to make your machine work for you and finish the course with a lovely machine quilted cushion panel to be proud of.
Finally, a number of customers have asked when Chris will have some more honey for sale. The next batch will be ready for sale from September. We had a very encouraging response to our first efforts (really, our bees first efforts). Chris is currently studying for his Intermediate Bee Keepers Exam, so your positive response has clearly been motivating!
Once again, many thanks for your continued support of PennyPot Patchwork.
Best wishes,
Helen and Chris
Newsletter Summer 2007
A little girl returning home from Sunday school was asked by her mother to say what the lesson had been about. She answered that the minister had taught them ‘don’t worry, you will get your quilt’. The mother thought this was a bit strange so, a few days later, she asked the minister what the lesson had really been about. The minister replied: “ fear not, thy comforter is coming”!
Hello and happy summer days to all!
It is a while since our last newsletter so I thought I would bring you up to date with developments here at PennyPot Patchwork.
We have been featured in the British Patchwork and Quilting magazine. Edwina Mackinnon came to see us in April and was very kind and encouraging about the shop. It is really strange to see PennyPot Patchwork presented from someone else’s point of view. We received many encouraging phone calls from people who had read the article and it was lovely to have contact with an even wider range of quilters.
We are constantly expanding our range of fabrics and I am delighted to say that our marbles now cover almost the whole of the back wall! It is reassuring to have plenty of marbles don’t you think?
Timeless Treasures ‘Morning Roast’ has arrived and departed pretty rapidly. Moda’s ‘Chelsea Boutique’ and ‘Sunshine’ have arrived and ‘Roman Holiday’ from 3 Sisters for Moda is in the process of arriving. The charm packs are here as are the new jelly-rolls. I was cautious about ordering these when they first hit the market, but now Moda has produced a good range of patterns and the design ideas are beginning to flow. They consist of 2and a half-inch wide strips of fabric, cut from the full width of the bolt and taken from each fabric in a design range. Hence the ‘Roman Holiday’ jelly-roll consists of 45 different strips rolled up into a lovely fabric Catherine wheel.
We have ‘Trains, Planes and Automobiles’ from Fabric Freedom –good drawings of real trains and planes (a great idea for the engineer in your life) and we also have their latest William Morris fabric. Maggie and Sharon (the designers) have kindly loaned us the quilt that has been made to promote the range. It is hanging up in the shop and looks really impressive – even better than in the photo in this month’s Br. Patchwork and Quilting.
I am writing this after a day of rain. The only thing missing is Noah! I keep watching Cow Dyke Beck but there is no sign of him yet. However it does remind me to tell you that we have some lovely fabric with galleons sailing across which might be deemed appropriate for the time of year! If you are really fed up with the rain we have some bright tropical fish to distract you too.
Chris has just finished completing the summer ‘Playdays’ brochure. I hope you find something of interest. It is important to encourage young quilters to join us and to this end we are offering two workshops aimed at a two-generation joint effort. If you have a son/daughter/grandson/granddaughter/ bring them along to share the enjoyment of our craft.
The appliqué dragon on the programme cover was done by Sue Propst’s daughter Leah who is 12. (Thank you Leah!)
Gill is running an Advanced Machine Quilting workshop. It is difficult to describe how impressive the results are. She is also sharing her artistic talents through her ‘Painting on Fabric’ workshop. Do come and join us if you get the chance.
A note about future arrivals: Hoffman has promised me their latest Japanese fabrics for the beginning of July. I had no intention of buying any and then I saw them and well, they are so lovely, I had no choice. I intend to order more brushed cottons for those warm snugly quilts too.
Whims Watercolour panel kits have already arrived in from the States and more are on order. Their cat kits are great fun and their flower panels made up from pre-cut 2” squares are very pretty. I also have a number of stencils in stock. Some of them are extra large for wholecloth projects.
Chris and I are already working on the class programme for September. We hope to have it ready by the end of July to allow plenty of time for booking places. We are full of ideas for classes, and welcome your suggestions too. Classes for that programme will begin during the third week of September.
Many thanks for your continued support of PennyPot Patchwork. It is lovely to see so many returning customers and to meet so many new quilters from all over the country.
Best wishes and Happy Quilting,
Helen
Hello and Happy Easter!
It might surprise you to know that PennyPot Patchwork will be one year old on April 25th! The year has gone past so quickly and so much has happened to the shop during that time. We started off with about 400 bolts of fabric and now have about 1000. The shelving has been moved back on a number of occasions to make the best use of space and now we have arrived at the most open layout possible, i.e. the walls! Now I have to be tidy as there is nowhere to hide!
We have just received some new fabrics including the Hoffmann Challenge, which is only 2 months late (!) and will now be judged at the Harrogate Show in September. Application forms for the competition are available from the shop.
Perfect Occasions ‘Japanese Garden’ is now in, together with ‘Calico Cats’, which you might have seen on the cover of Popular Patchwork recently. Zippy Jungle is a fun, bright children’s fabric, which Freda has worked her magic on. Come and see the ‘serving suggestions’ she has made for the shop. More pink, lilac, purple and aqua batiks have arrived from Hoffman and Fabric Freedom too.
We have some superb new sewing machines on display from Janome, courtesy of Philip at White Rose Sewing Machines. If you are looking for a machine and want to try one of these just come and see them!
The classroom has been put to good use and our workshops are thriving. Our tutors are talented, both in their sewing skills and in their ability to share those skills with others. Ideas abound and it is just a question of being able to fit everything into the time available in each programme without turning a relaxing experience into a race against time. Stress is what we want to leave out!
Next term will begin on Saturday 14th April with Sue Abrey’s ‘Sew Easy Rail Fence’ quilt. This was designed with beginners in mind but has a clever hidden pattern, which appeals to the more experienced quilter too. The Beginners Sampler Course will run for 12 weeks from Tuesday 17th April in the evenings from 7.00 – 9.00pm. The Intermediate Course returns to its original time of Thursday mornings 10.0 – 12.30.
For those who do not want the commitment of a weekly course, Sue Propst is offering a ‘Technique of the Week’ programme. This consists of 12, weekly sessions each based on a different aspect of quilting. Each session is complete in itself and will take place on a Tuesday morning from 10.00 – 12.30. Sessions are priced individually, at £12.50. However for those who wish to take advantage of enrolling in all 12 sessions the cost will be £120 reducing the price per session to £10.00 and giving an overall saving of £30.
We have a new tutor at PennyPot Patchwork, although her work will be familiar to many of you. Prior to moving to Yorkshire last year, Linda More was an active member of three local quilt groups. Over the last three years she has been a popular guest tutor at Lady Lodge Quilters and regular tutor to the Orton Community Quilters in the Peterborough area.
Linda is responsible for the Wrought Iron Gate panel in the shop. She thought the wrought iron wall hanging might help to sell the fabric. I was about to put the hanging sleeve on it (my contribution!) when a lady came into the shop, saw the panel and bought the whole bolt!! We thought it might be an idea to try and get some more, which we have succeeded in doing and now we are able to offer the workshop with a choice of panels.
We are offering a four-session course, taking place on Tuesday afternoons from 1.30 – 4.30. This course will include all the fabrics to enable you to make the complete panel top. We are offering 4 sessions to enable you to enjoy the course and complete the wall hanging without having to turbo charge your sewing machine!
Gill Browns’ very popular ‘Free-Motion Machine Quilting’ course continues for another 6 weeks. The Thursday class beginning on April 19th is already fully booked at the time of writing this programme. In response to demand we are again offering an extra course on Wednesday afternoons: 1.45 – 3.45. Book early!
This brings me to the last of the weekly courses but by no means the least of them! Jo Bebbington’s Baltimore and Applique course is a mixture of traditional needlecraft with the addition of innovative design and great fun. It is just not fair that I have to be in the shop while they are clearly having such a great time. If you have ever wondered if this could be for you, here is your chance to find out.
We have some lovely Saturday workshops for you including Stained Glass Applique, making the most of your decorative machine stitches with Jo’s crazy cushion panel,
Sue Propst’s Coloured Applique Lilly, Linda’s Silhouette Applique Fan block and Jo Bebbington’s successful Boutis class with the addition of an advanced class for the more adventurous. I will be offering my Absolute Beginners Sessions too; these are just that: for those who have never done any patchwork or indeed any sewing at all.
I do hope you find something here to interest you. We have more ideas for the next programme too, including sessions for 2 generations: grandparent /grandchild or parent/child: an opportunity for some team work!
Just a final note for those fans of Chris Marriage at Fathers-Heart Quilts or for those who have yet to discover her:
Chris has completed her house move and is now up and running again with her superb long-arm quilting. Her web site address and her phone number remain the same: www.fathers-heart.co.uk Tel: 07742 708230 / 01274 619280 .
Her new address is:
Father’s Heart Country Quilting,
16 Park Avenue,
Thackley,
Bradford,
BD10 0RJ.
Do give her a call. I hear she has an amazing new studio!
Best wishes and happy quilting,
Helen
Newsletter January 2007
Hello and a belated Happy New Year to everyone!
I hope you had a great holiday with lots of ‘Quilty’ presents to keep you sewing.
I must admit we had a good time with our permanently hungry offspring but I am glad to be back to normal i.e. starting the New Year diet!
Back to normal seems to mean the return of the ‘windswept look’. The gales have demolished any attempt I might have made at being well groomed. I set off to take some sandwiches over to the shop for lunch and half way across they turned into Scandinavian open topped ones as the bread went flying off across to the Jennyfields!
New for the New Year
We have been really busy since re-opening. We have a number of lovely new fabrics, some of which are exclusive to PennyPot Patchwork! Have a look at Michael Miller’s ‘Kilimanjaro’ on our web site. Hofmann has supplied some really pretty pink rosebud fabric on a creamy background: real English country cottage style.
Sue Abrey has produced the pattern for her Japanese Kimono quilt and this is available from the shop at £4.99 for the pattern only. The panel is £3.00 and there is a kit too.
A number of people have admired the checked flannel quilt, which we have on display and Sue has designed a pattern for that and for the Art Deco Fan quilt too. (I think some people never sleep, we believe that Freda Walton is really a twin whose sister comes out at night to sew.)
I have received our first supply of quilting stencils from the Stencil Company and these are on display now. I have some Madeira machine embroidery threads on special offer at half price.
Classes
The classes have got off to a very active start: the Beginners Sampler Course and the Intermediate Sampler Course are both full to capacity, as are the two ‘Free-motion machine quilting classes’ with Gill Brown. These popular courses run on a Thursday afternoon and also on a Wednesday afternoon in response to demand.
The ‘Free-Motion Machine Quilting Course lasts for 6 weeks and the next ones will begin on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd beginning at 1.45 and finishing at 3.45. We have some places available for February although they are filling up quickly, so please contact me if you would like a place.
We had a very busy workshop on Saturday with Hazel Williams making a big tote bag capable of holding a cutting board, ruler and all the other essentials we need to take with us on our travels.
I have just despatched the ‘ingredients’ list to those attending Sue Propst’s workshop next Saturday on curved piecing. It is such a clever technique. I first met Sue when she taught this workshop for Tuesday Quilters at Boston Spa. At the time I told her I was planning on opening a small patchwork and quilting shop and asked if she might, just possibly like to teach at PennyPot Patchwork ….I am so glad I went on that class!
Short Stack with Sue Propst is now fully booked but Gill’s ‘Magic Stack’ also known as ‘Stack and Whack’ or ‘Stack and Slash’ has a couple of places still available. Gill’s quilt is the lovely fan one opposite the entrance to the shop.
Freda Walton is weaving her magic again with her ‘Rag Doll Beauty’ in February. We have been busy talking outfits and hairstyles for this creation. We have a couple of places available at the moment of writing.
This brings me up to the end of February and to Hazel’s fabric boxes. These are not cardboard; they are sewn together and are fully washable! They are easy to make and
are also lovely gifts for friends - the only trouble is that when you have made them you no longer want to give them away. This is a good opportunity to play with your embroidery stitches if your machine has them. If you would like to see some finished ones call in to the shop or look at the photo in the programme.
We are very aware of the need for quick and easy projects for beginners or for those who want to produce a quilt top relatively quickly. Do look at Sue Abreys’ ‘Sew Easy Rail Fence’ top and Hazels ‘Let’s Twist”.
Plans for the future
Last term Sue Propst’s ‘Colour-wash Heart’ class was so popular that we ran and filled an extra class in response to demand. I have had a number of enquiries about a repeat of this class. If you would like us to put another one into the programme please just let me know and I will arrange it.
We have lots of ideas for next term including a whole day playing with Minkee fabrics, including demonstrations and samples. We will run a workshop based on Linda More’s lovely landscape panel with the wrought iron gate superimposed over the top. This is on display in the shop.
Linda is offering an introductory day during which she will teach the technique and you will complete a small panel. She is also offering a two-day workshop for those who would like to complete the full panel. We have a choice of two different landscape fabrics and the co-ordinating fabrics in stock. Details of dates, and costs will be in our next class programme together with many other new ideas from our tutors, which I hope will interest and entertain you.
I haven’t mentioned our special offer on 100% cotton wadding or our enlarged specials section at £5.00 per metre.
When I started writing this I told Chris it would be short, as I didn’t have much to say!
Thank you for your support, your patience and your good humour.
Happy quilting,
Helen
Welcome to our first newsletter! I have never written one of these before and have been sitting wondering how to begin! I have so much to write about that I want to say it all at once but must try to muster at least a pretence of discipline.
First of all I want to thank all those who have supported us in our first weeks of being open. This includes those kind people who have had to put up with my mistakes and having bought the cash ‘till that came from Arkwright’s store. We have moved it further back on the counter and the risks of a high impact injury of the chest have been reduced….so has my chest….
At the time of writing this we have been trading for all of six weeks. It has been a very busy time.
Since finishing at university my daughter Mary-Alice has been helping in the shop. She has been a great help, especially in tidying up after her Mum (role reversal?) welcoming customers, putting colours together and in sewing our new stock of novelty buttons onto cards.
New fabrics have been arriving and I am pleased to say they have also been leaving at a good rate too. Amongst our new arrivals is a selection of Hofmann batiks from Stoff International and Princess Mirah batiks from Fabri-Quilt. These lovely fabrics seem to flow from one rich shade to another and are a delight to work with.
I have a selection of Japanese fabrics by Kona Bay. Michael Miller and Robert Kaufman.
I am beginning to learn a great deal more about these beautiful fabrics and am looking forward to taking delivery of a special limited edition range from Kona Bay in early September. Each of these kimono panels is being released in two colour ways over a four month period and we will stock the full range together with complementary fabrics.
Emily’s Memories from Red Rooster extends the selection of Honey Bee Farm fabrics, for a more country feel to quilting. I also have some of this range in a very soft brushed fabric, which drapes beautifully.
Children’s fabrics are a great source of inspiration. Timeless Treasures bright patterns are very popular and we have received a new delivery of bright Jungle Animals with golden lions, purple rhinos, green hippos and blue elephants. This range also has a panel, which is big enough for a cot quilt.
Dolly’s House is a new arrival too from Red Rooster fabrics. This is a smaller design and comes in a warm yellow background or burnt orange.
Jacobean Joyeux has just arrived in from Benartex. This can be seen on our web site and includes a lovely floral panel for a medallion quilt or a table cover.
We stock a range of Australian quilting magazines. These arrive in the shop around the 17th of each month.
Our raffle for 4 fat quarter bundles was drawn at the end of May and the winners were:
Mrs. Mann received a bundle of batiks in greens and purples.
Mrs. Palmer received a bundle of brights from Timeless Treasures.
Mrs. Hensby received a bundle of batiks in autumn shades.
Mrs. Moore received a bundle of batiks in rainbow colours.
We will have a stand at the quilt show in Harrogate at the beginning of September. Do call and see us there if you can.
As promised, our first programme of classes and workshops accompanies this newsletter.
It is so important for classes to have a good tutor who is not only knowledgeable but fun too. I am thrilled to have a number of excellent tutors.
Jo Bebbington and Sue Propst are both well known amongst our quilt groups and will be teaching our 12 week courses and some Saturday workshops.
Jo was Head of Fashion and Design at Southend College before she retired and has chaired Crimple Valley Quilters for 2 years before stepping down last year.
Sue has City and Guilds qualifications in quilting and an HND qualification in Textiles. Her classes and workshops are very popular and very much in demand.
In addition Freda Walton (City and Guilds) is going to show us how to make a fabulous Santa. Freda’s beautiful work is well known in our groups and she has designed a number of the kits for PennyPot Patchwork.
Sue Abrey is a member of the hard working committee of Tuesday Quilters in Boston Spa. She has a great deal of experience in advising on problem UFO’s, selecting quilting patterns for completed tops and coming up with all sorts of great ideas for patchwork. She is highly skilled in the use of computer aided design to enable quilters to create and see the finished quilt before it is even started,
Our newly refurbished workshop on the ground floor provides plenty of light and space to enable groups to work in comfort. Access is very easy and it is possible to drive right up to the door to drop off sewing equipment before parking in our private car park. Despite the generous, space groups will be small to ensure plenty of time for the tutors to help everyone.
Of course tea/coffee/ herbal drinks and biscuits will be provided to bridge the energy gaps!
Husquvarna Viking, the Swedish manufacturer of sewing machines has promised to put 6 new sewing machines into the classroom for use in classes and workshops for a period of 12 weeks. This means that students not wishing to bring their own machine will be able to use those available on site.
Shop opening hours during classes.
PennyPot Patchwork continues to be open Tuesday – Saturday, 10.00 – 4.00, however for those attending classes which start at 10.00 the shop will be open from 9.30 a.m.
Those students buying materials for a course on site will receive 5% discount on their purchases from the shop.
I do hope I have brought everyone up to date with our progress here. If we can be of any help with your quilting activities come and see us or give us a call. It is great to see our customers returning for repeat visits.
Best wishes and happy quilting,
